Subject: Anyone have "The King and I" dvd?
Jay,
I'm looking for a borrowable copy of "The King and I - 50th anniversary edition" DVD, which includes "sing-along" segments. If possible, I'd like to pick it up this afternoon, though I could wait until tomorrow. I could return it on Sunday afternoon. Would you mind asking if any of the kind folks at AUMC have a copy they'd loan me?
Thanks -
Kay

{AUMC List} Fed Up and O'Charleys
Dear friends,
I wanted to share with you some thoughts that I have just posted on the church website in response to the latest tragedy at O’ Charley’s in Hickory Hollow:
On Tuesday night, I stood on a stage in front of 500 of our neighbors praying for the future of our community, and proclaiming that I was Fed Up with the cycle of violence in our community.
On Wednesday, a man named David Kimball walked into O Charley's to recover some money related to a drug debt, and ended up stabbing an innocent off-duty employee named Eris Bruno to death.
On Tuesday, we experienced the hope that we will make things better. On Wednesday, we were confronted with the fact that we live in a broken world, and bad things continue to happen in the face of our hope.
Our prayers go to the family of Eris Bruno, a 39 year old man formerly from Haiti who had made Antioch his home. He tried to do the right thing, standing up against one who believed that violence was the answer, and ended up losing his life in supporting his friends and colleagues at work. May God's grace be with all who loved and knew Eris in the days ahead.
However, our prayers must also go out to David Kimball as well. He is, as a perpetrator of violence, our enemy, and we have been called to love all -- both the heroic and the cowardly, the one who stands up for right and the ones who continue to follow the path of wrong doing. I know nothing about him other than that he was created as a child of God, just like each one of us, and that his soul is in turmoil. Certainly, he is accountable for his actions, and our courts will judge his crimes. But we must remember that there are probably many other David's in our community who desperately need the love of Jesus Christ, just as this David needs it.
We continue to live in a world in which we experience both hope and despair.
But the good news of Jesus Christ tells us that in the midst of pain and death, we experience resurrection.
Our hope is not misplaced. Our hope reminds us that there is something much better to come, and part of our task is to make that hope a reality.
The tendency in the face of the news reports is to run away in fear.
But running in fear is never the Christian way of being. So it is our job to continue to proclaim the light in the midst of the darkness, to offer hope in the midst of despair.
I’ve been working on the website, so you may want to check it out if you haven’t visited in a while. We still have some work to day, but I hope that it is a bit more organized. That address is www.antiochumc.net.
See you on Sunday.
Peace,
Jay

The picnic on August 10th is our regular monthly pot luck only this time it is a picnic. Please bring any type of picnic items to share. We will not be grilling any hamburgers or hot dogs. Drinks will be furnished. There will be also a surprise. We are at the Counchville shelter #1. {AUMC List} A FedUp Reminder
Dear friends,
I write this morning to remind you of the FedUp March and Rally tonight beginning at 6 p.m. at the Hickory Hollow Mall.
Why am I excited about this and working to involve our congregation? It is in the belief that the transformation of our community requires partnerships with other groups to make Antioch a better place. We have been invited into a new relationship with the folks at Mt Zion Baptist which extends much further into our community, and I believe that this partnership will achieve great things here.
We really have two choices as a congregation – to wall ourselves in on the top of the hill and look around in fear as the world passes us by, or to walk with others in the community to ensure that God’s kingdom reality is brought to fruition. I continue to hear from you the desire to be involved in our community, and this event, and what we hope will be a larger movement, will allow us to develop relationships with others in Antioch that will enhance our ministry for the future.
So, how are is our church partnering in this, and how can you be involved?
The most basic thing we have contributed so far is the development of a web site for the event and to use for community connections in the future. You can visit that website at www.fedup-antioch.com. There is also a recognition that our church has been in this community for a long time, and that we have a unique perspective on things here that needs to be heard.
However, your presence will be the key in developing the relationships for the long haul. I am certainly trying to make myself visible in the community on your behalf, but at some point others take me much more seriously when they see with their own eyes that I represent a couple of hundred people. More importantly, your presence puts you in contact with our neighbors, those whom we are to love in a special way.
Given the heat tonight I recognize that several of you will be unable to participate tonight due to physical limitations. However, for those of us that can still tolerate the heat, I encourage you to come on out to the mall and check things out. There will be food vendors there if you are looking for dinner (and Pyramids Café in the mall is excellent), and activities for kids and youth. The mall has also extended the sidewalk sale they were having over the weekend (not tax-free however) and you would have the opportunity to shop following the rally.
You can find out all the details at the website listed above. Basically, you should show up at Hickory Hollow behind Steve and Barry’s around 5:30 p.m. to catch a shuttle to the march start point (the old MediaPlay, now Lakeshore Church). We will begin walking at 6 p.m. down Bell Rd. to the main entrance of the mall and to the rally location in the back parking lot. For those who are unable to march, there will be music at the rally site and you are welcome to bring your lawn chairs. There will be a rally at 7 p.m. featuring the mayor, Bishop Joe Walker, and other distinguished guests.
Sorry for the long e-mail, but to wrap things up simply: Y’all come!
See you later,
Jay

{AUMC List} Evelyn Nevils Funeral Arrangements
Dear friends,
As we announced this morning in worship, Evelyn Nevils, former secretary of our church and a long time member, has passed from this life into the world to come. We mourn our loss of this saint, and pray God’s comfort upon her family.
Visitation with Evelyn’s family will be on Monday, August 4 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Woodlawn Funeral Home on Thompson Lane.
The funeral service will be held in the Antioch United Methodist Church sanctuary at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, with visitation one hour preceding the service. Evelyn’s body will then be taken to Woodlawn Cemetery for a graveside service and internment.
Please make sure to spread the word of these arrangements through your circles of friends, and keep the entire Nevils family in your prayers.
Peace,
Jay

{AUMC List} Stuff to come....
e-update for 8/1/2008
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
It is hard to believe it, but we are quickly approaching the time when the kids will be back in school and when the normal rhythm of life returns after a season of sun and play. This is especially true for our church, as the “back to school” season is a time of ramping up for a new year. As we enter this time of new beginnings for many, I want to make sure that you had some key events on your calendar as you plan for the days ahead.
Love Team Meeting this Sunday
For several years I have been wanting to pull together a group of people who represent our congregation to those who are unable to attend our services any more due to poor health. This “Love Team” will not replace the pastor in visiting the homebound, but will supplement what I do by making sure that our “invisible” members don’t remain invisible, and by connecting with them more regularly than I can accomplish. Anyone who is interested in the ministry of care to our homebound and nursing home members is invited to join me for lunch this coming Sunday right after the late worship service in the Fellowship Hall. I will be ordering some pizza and we will talk about how we might organize our work together to ensure that the elderly and frail who are no longer able to attend our services are not forgotten.
FEDUP March and Rally – Tuesday, August 5 at Hickory Hollow Mall
This event is a partnership of business and community organizations focused on rallying our community to combat teen violence. We are a partner in sponsoring this event (along with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church) and I would love to see as many folks as possible at the mall at 6:00 p.m. to march from the old MediaPlay building down to the back parking lot at the mall as a symbol of our commitment to our neighborhood. If you would like more information on this event, visit www.fedup-antioch.com.
Discipleship for Dummies – beginning Sunday, August 10
This will be a new sermon series focused on four practices of discipleship offered at a very basic level. This would be a great time to invite friends and family who may be unfamiliar with what it means to be a Christian or who need to know more about how to experience God and Christ.
Church Picnic – Sunday, August 10 at Long Hunter State Park
We had a great gathering last year at Cain Ridge Park and are moving this year across the lake to Long Hunter for good food and fellowship. The picnic will start as soon as folks can arrive after the late worship service. All are asked to bring a dish to share. Thanks to Janice Crittenden for pulling this together.
Manthano Orientation – Sunday, August 10 at 4 p.m.
Yes, next Sunday will be a long day, but I will be holding an informational/orientation session about the Manthano program next Sunday at 4 p.m. Anyone who is looking to grow deeper in their knowledge and experience of God is invited to come by and find out more information on the class. As of right now, it looks like class sessions will be held on Sundays at 4 p.m., however that is negotiable depending on the needs of the group.
Christian Education and Bible Presentation Sunday – Sunday, August 17 at the Worship Celebration (10:30 a.m. service)
Every year at the beginning of the school year we take some time to “promote” our children to the next grade level class, and to present our 3rd grade students with bibles. This is a special time and I want to encourage all to make a special effort to support our kids on this Sunday.
89th Annual United Methodist Men’s Pigout – Sunday, August 24 following Worship Celebration
It’s a tradition that goes back for centuries . . .well at least for several years . . . and you will want to get this great feast on your calendar. This event is a fundraiser for our United Methodist Men, and the proceeds of the event go to help with a variety of mission projects and church needs throughout the year. For more information, talk to Mike Rainey, the Grand PoohBah of the United Methodist Men’s group.
Of course, there are other things in the works . . . a revamped midweek program which will start back at the end of the month, as well as our Fall Fair in August. It’s a busy time, and a good time to plug back in if you have been away.
I look forward to seeing you this Sunday!
Peace,
Jay

{AUMC List} Update on Evelyn Nevils
Dear friends,
Here is the latest info that I have about Evelyn Nevils as of my visit just before lunchtime.
Evelyn is in the last stages of her life. She has experience renal failure, and has an antibiotic resistant infection that is untreatable. She is resting at Southern Hills, and is surrounded by her kids and grandkids. No one truly knows how long her body will hang on, but it is likely that her body will give up sometime in the next day or so.
Please keep John, Suzanne, Philip, and Jeff in your prayers as they help their mom from this life into the next.
May God hold Evelyn, and our friend Billye Parham in the palm of his hand during the coming days.
Peace,
Jay
